Vincent Who?

Director: Tony Lam

Producer: Curtis Chin

Executive Producers: Catherine Park, Keith Kamisugi

The Vincent Chin case stands as a pivotal landmark in Asian American history as well as American civil rights history, yet most people today, including Asian Americans, have never even heard the name, “Vincent Chin.”

Vincent Chin, a Chinese American man, was beaten to death by two white autoworkers in Detroit in June 1982. The judge, however, let off the killers with only a $3,000 fine and 3 years probation.

Vincent Who? opens with a guerrilla-style survey of students on a college campus to see how many have heard of Vincent Chin. A narrative summary of the Chin case follows, interspersed with footage from the Academy Award-nominated documentary, Who Killed Vincent Chin?

Through interviews with some of the key players from 25 years ago as well as contemporary Asian American leaders and activists, Vincent WhoO? then explores the impact of the Vincent Chin case. Interviewees and speakers include Helen Zia, Stewart Kwoh, Judy Chu, Mike Eng, Eric Nakamura, Renee Tajima-Pena and a diverse group of APA’s who grew up in Michigan and were later inspired to become activists.
