Nominated for Grand Jury Prize!

Patsy Mink, the first woman of color to serve in the United States Congress, faced adversity at almost every turn in her life. Politically, Mink took racism and sexism head on and continued to challenge the boundaries set forth by American politics. An adamant liberal politician, she spoke out against the Vietnam War, even running for president on an Anti-Vietnam War platform. Mink co-authored Title IX, which opened opportunities for women by prohibiting gender discrimination in schools, including athletics. While Mink seemed fearless and unwavering of her mission in the political arena, she did so at great personal sacrifice. Constantly pushing the limits of social acceptability for a Japanese female, Mink spent much of her life isolated by her party and colleagues. While this made her journey a lonely one, she continued to persevere and change the face of American politics.
Director Kimberlee Bassford has eloquently given unique insight to Patsy Mink’s courageous story. Mink’s work in Congress has stretched far beyond the legislation she had her hands in and bettered the opportunities for every woman to follow. Bassford tells Mink’s story thoughtful of her contributions but also sensitive to the sacrifices she made to make them. The product is an inspiring and humbling film about a woman who refused to take no for an answer.
