The Akaka Bill: Creating a Nation or Erasing It | 24 min | Trevor Atkins & Hayden Atkins | USA | MiniDV | 2009

Local filmmaker Hayden Atkins in person!

Native Hawaiian programs, seen by some as racist institutions, may soon be outlawed unless the United States recognizes Native Hawaiians as one of America’s indigenous people, entitled to special rights. But some Hawaiians have a serious problem with the language of this federal recognition bill and it’s disregard for the true history of the Hawaiian Kingdom. Meanwhile, bill supporters argue that federal recognition is as good as it gets.

Co-directors Trevor and Hayden Atkins are sixth-generation haole residents on the island of Hawai`i. Their ancestors were loyal to the Hawaiian Kingdom. While they are not indigenous to Hawaii, they are lifelong advocates for indigenous rights and they believe it is the responsibility of all Hawaii residents to understand Hawaii’s ugly and highly political past, present, and future. The brothers are former and present students of the Univ. of Oregon’s School of Journalism and Communication, respectively.
