“Luminous! One of the most beloved films at Sundance this year.” — Roger Ebert
In this festival favorite, Eve, a precocious nine-year-old, lives with the stigma of being born in the year of the Fire Horse, which marks her among the Chinese who believe in superstition as bringing great misfortune to her family. As ill befalls her family from her mother's miscarriage and depression to her grandmother's death, Eve and her older sister search for a way to turn their family fortunes around.
With a graceful understated humor, the tale follows Eve's sincere and wildly imaginative attempts to understand the world around her, a world laced with racism and hatred, touched by death, and one where Buddhism and Catholicism beliefs collide and meld in a child's imagination into surreal visions of Buddha and Jesus dancing together. Filled with other unforgettable sights, Eve and the Firehorse poignantly portrays the complexities of childhood and life in all its wonder, as seen through the eyes of a child.
